This was an experiment in writing for a combo with three horns. I originally began writing this with alto sax in mind for the melody, but as I began writing the backgrounds, it became clear to me that I needed the middle voice for the horns. It started out as a 12-bar bebop blues form, but I got writers’ block during the turnaround and found it sounded fine as an eight bar progression. The guitar carries the melody as the melody as the horns provide stabs to add flavor. It has a simple head – solos – head out form so it makes a great piece to jam on. Download the score and the parts below and listen to a MIDI sample of the piece.
